Not All Electrolyte Capsules Are Created Equal

BY DEAN KARNAZES

With spring upon us and summer around the corner, temperatures are starting to warm. And when temperatures start to warm, we tend to sweat more. And when we sweat more, we need to replace not just the lost fluids but also the lost electrolytes. What I’ve come to understand is that not all electrolyte capsules are created equal.

I discovered the merits of Endurolytes, by Hammer Nutrition, during the Badwater Ultramarathon, a notoriously punishing 135-mile footrace across Death Valley in the middle of summer, where temperatures can reach a shoe melting 130°F. Many electrolyte capsules are primarily sodium, but Endurolytes are a full-spectrum formula containing a balanced blend of sodium chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium to help ensure proper function of all body systems.

The other element that I find tremendously beneficial with Endurolytes is that they also contain ginger root. Standard electrolyte capsules can be tough on the stomach and potentially cause nausea, but ginger root helps soothe the G.I. track. I typically take 2 to 3 capsules per hour, depending on the heat and humidity, and have no issues with tolerance or stomach problems.

What I’ve also come to learn through working with the team at Hammer Nutrition is that the amount of salt you habitually consume in your daily diet largely determines the amount of salt you will need to consume during exercise and races. If you consume a high-salt diet, you will need to increase your hourly dose of Endurolytes (or use the big brother of Endurolytes, Endurolytes Extreme). I don’t use a lot of added salt in my daily diet, so 2 to 3 Endurolyte capsules per hour works fine for me.

And here’s a pro tip, if you do want to salt your foods after a heavy day of exercise, try cracking open a capsule of Endurolytes and sprinkling it on your meal (or use in meal your preparation). Because the formulation contains a full-spectrum of electrolytes— sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium and manganese—plus ginger root, it adds an interesting dimension of flavors to your dish. And it’s much healthier than MSG!

So try Endurolytes on your next warm weather run or workout. They got me to the finish of the Badwater Ultramarathon, and I’m confident they can help your performance as well.

Yours in sports and life,
