Omega-3’s Beneficial in Battle Against Breast Cancer

The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids continue to pour in. The most recent good news comes via research from the University of Nebraska that was published in the online journal Clinical & Experimental Metastasis.
In this study, one group of female mice received diets that contained omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish. Another group of female mice received diets that contained an equal amount of omega-6 fatty acids derived from plants. After a 16-week period, the mice were injected with aggressive breast cancer cells. All the mice that survived were autopsied 35 days later.
The mice whose diets were enriched with omega-3 fatty acids exhibited either no breast tumor development or had delays in tumor development. On day 35 after injection, the tumors of the omega-3 mice were 50% smaller than those of the omega-6 mice.
Additionally, metastasis (the spread of cancer cells from the place where they first formed to another part of the body) to the heart, kidneys, and ovaries were fewer and smaller in the mice who received omega-3 fatty acids in their diet. A number of other positive effects were noted for the omega-3 mice.
Lead researcher, Saraswoti Khadge of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Department of Pathology and Microbiology, summarized: “Our study emphasizes the potential therapeutic role of dietary long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in the control of tumor growth and metastasis. Our data suggest that dietary long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulates the mammary tumor microenvironment, slowing tumor growth and reducing metastases to both common and less preferential organs resulting in prolonged survival.”
Another take-away message from this study isn’t that omega-6’s are bad for us, but rather that the excess amounts of omega-6’s consumed within our regular diets are problematic. Both omega-3’s and omega 6’s are essential fatty acids that are necessary for life… in the proper amounts. Research clearly shows that an approximate 1:3 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is ideal, but estimates of today’s diet reveal that the ratio averages around 1:20—obviously way out of the optimal range.
