Nutrient Combination May Slow Brain Aging

A recent report in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity reveals that a combination of vitamin D and alpha lipoic acid (found in Mito Caps) may prove to be highly beneficial in slowing the rate of brain aging [1].

In this study, researchers used both nutrients to determine their effect on iron accumulation damage and oxidative stress, both of which heavily impact brain aging. Cultures of specific brain cells known as astrocytes—responsible for numerous brain functions, including regulating the transmission of electrical impulses within the brain—were treated with hydrogen peroxide or a type of iron known as catalytic (a.k.a. labile) iron to induce oxidative stress (caused by excess free radical accumulation) and neurodegeneration (degeneration of the nervous system, especially of neurons in the brain).

In vitro (performed or taking place in a test tube, culture dish, etc.), these nutrients were found to cross the blood-brain barrier, which confirmed their feasibility and usefulness in brain disorders.

In the brain cells treated with hydrogen peroxide, the vitamin D/lipoic acid combination decreased the programmed death of cells (apoptosis) caused by oxidative stress. In the cells treated with iron, vitamin D and lipoic acid were shown to prevent the accumulation of this mineral.

Every 7-capsule dose of Premium Insurance Caps contains 500 IU of vitamin D3, which is definitely a good start, with many studies suggesting that amounts ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 IU are ideal for maintaining optimal vitamin D status. A 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test will provide you with a more-precise figure regarding how much vitamin D3 you need to supplement with.

Every 3-capsule dose of Mito Caps—a product I highly recommend taking all year long—contains an excellent 150 mg amount of r-alpha lipoic acid, which is the most bioavailable form of this nutrient.

There are a number of nutrients that help support optimal brain function (e.g. the omega-3 fatty acids found in EndurOmega), and that list now contains the multi-beneficial nutrients vitamin D and alpha lipoic acid. Taking Premium Insurance Caps (with additional vitamin D) and Mito Caps each and every day is a no-brainer for the health of your brain!
