Non-acidic sports drink
  • Sustained energy, no sugar crash
  • Reduces cramps
  • Buffers lactic acid
  • Supports dental health

Discontinued: Melon (80 servings)

SKU: HE

BENEFITS:

Most “sports drinks” are the same—lots of sugar, salt, and citric acid. HEED is your healthy, subtle-flavored alternative—complex carbohydrates, a balanced electrolyte profile, and essential nutrients balance blood sugar, buffer lactic acid, and ensure long-lasting energy. Xylitol and stevia are tooth-friendly sweeteners.

Mix 1 scoop to 16-28 ounces of water.

Please Note: It is believed that xylitol is unsafe for consumption by dogs; therefore, we do not recommend you feed your dog any products that contain xylitol, nor any products that are made for human consumption. More information.

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN:

Maltodextrin – A high-glycemic index (GI) complex carbohydrate, ideal for providing fast-acting, long-lasting energy during exercise and for replenishing the body’s glycogen stores after exercise.

Xylitol – This natural sweetener is found in a variety of fibrous fruits and vegetables. It promotes oral health, as it does not ferment and support the acid-producing bacteria that cause tooth decay. NOTE: It is believed that xylitol is unsafe for consumption by dogs; therefore, we do not recommend you feed your dog any xylitol-containing products, including HEED or Recoverite.

Full-spectrum electrolyte profile – The complete profile of sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and potassium helps maintain performance of many important bodily functions during exercise, while also helping protect against muscle cramping.

L-Carnosine – One of the most versatile and beneficial nutrients available. It buffers lactic acid during exercise and offers antioxidant support.

Glycine – This amino acid is beneficial for aiding with muscle tissue repair, protecting collagen in joints, and reducing joint pain. Additionally, glycine has a naturally sweet taste, contributing to HEED’s delicious flavor.

L-Tyrosine – Aids in the functioning of the adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid glands, which are responsible for the production and regulation of numerous key hormones. This contributes to increased performance levels and decreased recovery time.

Manganese – This trace mineral is necessary for optimal muscle cell enzyme reactions and for the conversion of fatty acids and protein into energy.

Chromemate® brand chromium polynicotinate – This trace mineral helps regulate blood sugar and plays a vital role in the synthesis of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids.

Q

Is HEED and other products allowed to be used while complying with the NCAA?

Asked by HAWK
Verified Reply - SteveNone of the Hammer Nutrition supplements or fuels have any kind of official “NCAA approved” status or certification. I don’t even know if there is such a thing, but with the amount of third-party testing that is already done on our products, plus the fact that all of products are produced in GMP-certified, banned substance-free facilities—which eliminates the possibility of cross-contamination—additional testing is completely redundant, unnecessary, and super expensive. That said, when you look at the list of the substances banned by the NCAA—http://www.ncaa.org/2018-19-ncaa-banned-drugs-list—there is nothing on that list that is contained in any Hammer Nutrition product. I do agree with the NCAA’s position that “Before consuming any nutritional/dietary supplement product, review the product with the appropriate or designated athletics department staff.” Still, I cannot see anything at all in HEED or any other Hammer Nutrition product that would not be permissible for use by the NCAA.
Q

What flavor would recommend for children/young athletes?

Asked by Steve
Verified Reply - SteveOver the years, I (Steve Born) have sampled HEED at many of the events that Hammer Nutrition sponsors. The Mandarin Orange flavor has always appeared to be a clear favorite, followed my Strawberry.
Q

Is HEED a powder that you mix with water? Or is it just a drink that you can drink right away?

Asked by Justin Cox
Verified Reply - SteveHEED is a powder that you mix with water.
Q

Is HEED safe for young atheletes, active 12 year olds during sports season?

Asked by Mrs. G
Verified Reply - Steve HEED is not only 100% safe for young athletes, it's an undeniably a better choice than the plethora of sugar-filled, artificially colored and sweetened sports/energy drinks available. HEED contains the complex carbohydrate maltodextrin (not refined sugars) and two natural sweeteners - xylitol and stevia - which are not only safe, but also beneficial to teeth and gums.
Q

For a 3 hour hard road ride, would you recommend Heed for the first 2 hours and Perpetum for the 3rd hour? thank you.

Asked by Nicholas
Verified Reply - SteveI recommend using HEED for the entire 3 hours of the ride. During fast, high-intensity events lasting up to 3 hours--perhaps even a bit longer--a "carb only" fuel (Hammer Gel or HEED) will work perfectly well. While using Perpetuem wouldn't be wrong in any way, when the intensity is super high during an "up to 3 hour or slightly longer" effort, the emphasis needs to be more on fuel is going to be the fastest to digest, meaning Hammer Gel or HEED ("carb only" fuels) The issues surrounding no protein intake (ammonia build-up and fatigue) are not going to be much of a factor at all when you’re going to be done in 3-or-so hours. By the time the “ammonia issue” really becomes something to deal with, you’ll have already long finished your ride. Now, if you were going to take 4.5 – 5 hours or longer, we’d have a different plan. But for someone doing a hard 3-hour (or anywhere near that time) road ride, it’s not crucial to use a “carb + protein” fuel like Sustained Energy or Perpetuem… not wrong in any way, shape, or form; just not necessary.
Q

I being using Heed for about a month already, great results, excellent product. I noticed that the flavor is very light for one scoop on a 24oz btl. Is that normal or I should use two spoons ? Is the light flavor due to the low sugar on the product ? Thanks and keep up the good work

Asked by Rudyt28
Verified Reply - SteveThe light flavor is by design! When we were in the beginning stages in formulating HEED, the main complaint that we heard from athletes was that all the other sports drinks currently available were too sweet. So that was one major thing we worked on. We always use maltodextrin (complex carbs) in our fuels, and that starch-like carbohydrate is not very sweet to begin with. We wanted to give the product a bit of sweetness, but adding sugar or artificial sweeteners weren't an option. Instead, we opted to use a small amount of xylitol and stevia. Both of these sweeteners are undeniably better options than sugar or artificial ingredients (see https://www.hammernutrition.com/knowledge/advanced-knowledge/how-is-xylitol-and-stevia-used-in-your-products/ for more info), and because they are both several times sweeter than sugar, only a small amount was needed. The result is a sports drink that's not short on calories (100 per scoop), but comes without that unpleasant overly sweet and syrupy taste. The amount you need during exercise is based on body weight... please see https://www.hammernutrition.com/heed-sports-drink/ for more information.
Q

In Hot (>90+) and High Humidity areas, I've frozen 1/2 bike bottle of sports drink the night before and then in the am filled the other half with cold sports drink. So that it was drinkable for the first 1.5 to 2 hrs. Could I do the same thing with Heed? or would that affect the ingredients or effectiveness?

Asked by Hammer newbie
Verified Reply - SteveYes, you can premixed HEED and freeze it with no loss of potency or degradation to any of the ingredients.
Q

Is HEED low sugar or have a lower glycemic index. I need the carbs but I don't want sugar.

Asked by AusTex
Verified Reply - SteveSugar is defined as a one- or two-chain molecule (aka "simple sugars"), with glucose, dextrose, sucrose, fructose, and galactose falling within that category. HEED does not contain any of these sugars. The carbohydrate source in HEED is maltodextrin, which is a high-glycemic index (GI) carbohydrate source so it will spike your blood sugar. That doesn't sound like a benefit, but this is EXACTLY what you want when you’re engaged in exercise. You don’t want your carbs to take forever to increase your blood sugar/energy levels; you want that energy quickly, and that’s what maltodextrin does. Its GI rating is the same as pure glucose (100) so it definitely increases blood sugar/energy levels quickly. What it doesn’t do, however—and you can’t say this about glucose, sucrose, fructose, and other short-chain carbohydrates (a.k.a. “simple sugars”)—is drop those levels quickly or precipitously. Sugar is more of a “flash and crash” type of energy, while maltodextrin—because it is MANY saccharide molecules weakly linked together—provides a “quick-acting, long-lasting” energy. Another great thing with maltodextrin is that your body is able to digest a greater amount of calories—with no delay from entry to exit of the digestive tract—and make them available for energy production. You can efficiently digest up to 3x more calories with maltodextrin than you can with any simple sugar. As far as insulin is concerned, maltodextrin does elevate blood sugar levels very rapidly and will cause an insulin release. This is not a significant factor during exercise, however, as Dr. Bill Misner explains: "During exercise insulin release is inhibited because sympathetic nervous system hormones are released and, concurrently, exercise augments muscle uptake of glucose from exogenous intake accompanied by lower insulin levels and effects." Basically, what Dr. Misner is saying is that because energy turnover is high, and with the release of specific central nervous system hormones, the body is able to deliver glucose to the muscles with less insulin. Shortly after exercise—ideally within the first 30 minutes after it has been complete—when the glycogen synthase enzyme is highly active and when insulin is needed to work with glycogen synthase to convert ingested carbohydrates to glycogen for storage in the muscles, a high-glycemic, insulin-releasing/spiking carbohydrate such as maltodextrin is highly desirable. Aside from during and immediately following exercise, we do not recommend consuming high-GI carbohydrates, including maltodextrin. Additional Note: Maltodextrin is the ideal choice for pre-diabetic and diabetics, as long as its use is limited to during exercise and immediately after. As just mentioned, at all other times we recommend consuming low-to-moderate glycemic index carbohydrates. It’s important to mention that a sizable number of our clients are Type I and Type II diabetics, including sponsored athlete Peter Van Rompaey (https://www.hammernutrition.com/knowledge/endurance-news/diabetic-athlete-peter-van-rompaey/), and they find our maltodextrin-containing products to be ideal for them.
