Coffee’s Benefits Best When Hot


Cold or hot, coffee has so many research-confirmed benefits that we’re just happy if you drink it. A new study, however, shows that hot-brewed coffee has higher level of antioxidants than cold-brewed coffee. This may be due to higher levels of specific acids in hot-brewed coffee, especially chlorogenic acid.

Despite hot-brewed coffee containing higher total amounts of what lead researchers Dr. Niny Rao and Dr. Megan Fuller referred to as “titratable acids,” it was also found that the pH levels of both cold and hot coffee were similar - all samples tested at levels ranging from 4.85 to 5.13. This is good news for people who want to drink hot coffee, but instead opt for cold-brewed coffee since it’s touted as less acidic and more “stomach friendly.”

Drs. Rao and Fuller summarized: “Coffee has a lot of antioxidants, if you drink it in moderation, research shows it can be pretty good for you. We found the hot brew has more antioxidant capacity. And considering hot and cold brews have comparable pH levels, coffee drinkers should not consider cold brew a ‘silver bullet’ for avoiding gastrointestinal distress.”
