Study: Sugary Sodas Speed Aging
Many popular sports drinks are made with the same unhealthy sugars
Does your sports drink contain sucrose, dextrose, and/or fructose? If so, you're fueling your workouts with the same unhealthy sugars used in soft drinks, and that could be dangerous.
In a recently published study involving 5,300 men and women, drinking a single 20-oz. serving of sugary soda daily was associated with about 4.6 years of added biological aging!
According to researchers
Findings published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed a link between drinking sugar-sweetened sodas and shorter telomeres within white blood cells. Made up of DNA strands, telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes from damage. Short telomeres have been associated with oxidative damage, inflammation, and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer.
According to senior study author Elissa Epel, Ph.D., "Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas might influence disease development" by straining the body's metabolic control of sugars, and by accelerating cellular aging of tissues. "Telomere shortening starts long before disease onset."
What you can do
Protect yourself by minimizing your intake of simple sugars in any form. Forego all sugary sodas, sweetened teas, and flavored coffees. Eat whole foods, not processed foods, which usually contain hidden sugars. And check the label of your sports drink! Many popular brands contain sucrose, glucose, dextrose, or fructose - a.k.a. simple sugars. Hammer Nutrition's HEED contains no simple sugars, only healthy complex carbohydrates guaranteed to deliver sustained energy without the adverse health effects of simple sugars. HN
Among sports drinks, HEED truly is one of a kind. HEED contains no added simple sugars and no artificial colors or sweeteners. Its subtle, never sugary-sweet flavor goes down easily. And because HEED contains no citric acid, it won't burn your throat or stomach. Find out why thousands of athletes prefer HEED to every other sports drink.
