recovery time with broken wrist

I have a friend who broke his wrist mountain biking. Nothing unusual, but after a month in a cast the doc said it wasn't healing normally and would need a screw. Then he said to stay off the bike for 3 MONTHS, because even road riding would "shake the screw loose." Anybody ever heard of such a thing? My impression is, the pros are back on their bikes three days after having screws inserted in breaks. Does my friend just have a hyper-cautious doctor?
